User-Leader Lucy presents 3 LOW-COST TABLETS she tested
Lucy brought a Samsung 7inch Tablet and her notes, but didn’t do the presentation as she had already shown this to me and no one else showed.
later returned it for an Acer A100
I recently found a couple high-quality tablets on sale:
* Dell Streak 7 16GB, WiFi only, $180
* Dell Streak 7 16GB, WiFi and 4G, $185
* Acer Iconia 8GB, WiFi, $200
Dell Streak 7 with 4G indeed seems cool as a possible combo with the $30/mo 4G phone contract I have. Only question is support as the 7 is discontinued but indeed that Wikipedia link mentions a CyanogenMod ROM.
Yes, I returned my Samsung for an Acer A100.
Limited time only!
* Dell Streak 7 is now only $150.
* All new Google Nexus 7 is available for pre-order.
*Streak link is now up to $200.
*Yes, Nexus 7 looks pretty hot, from http://www.zdnet.com/the-nexus-7-is-only-missing-one-thing-7000001182/ which was listed on the front-page of http://news.Google.com . And for just $200 and with a quad processor plus 100% latest Google, Lucy, why not return the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 (for $250) and get the Nexus 7?
I see from reading the newspaper coupons for our venue that our venue has an app! “Round Table Pizza Lake Forest[by ]Levco Marketing Solutions LLC” (in both for Android & for iPhone).
for the the Large Pizzas, including for our usual (with 3 toppings). The buffet discounts are the same price.
*The app gives deals which are $.99 more
*The app allows you to earn stuff with each visit apparently by scanning the register’s QR code. However at the counter the cashier explained you don’t need to bring the app each time for rewards points, just scan the code at the counter when you want to use the buffet coupon.
Should at least this venue (S.OC) meet monthly (for 1 combined developer+user mtg) instead of present every-other-week?
*Why consider this?
**We (Lucy & I, the 2 attendees) were disappointed when in fact only 2 people (leaders myself & Lucy) showed for this meeting, causing us to end the meeting about 1.3hrs early at about 8:40pm. Our prior main meeting also had just 2 attendees, both leaders.
**We’ve done all sorts of improvements and we don’t see anything else we can significantly do to increase attendance (other than to find, advertise in advance,& run more presentations, and no one seems willing to put in that work)
**Studying (the 2nd largest Android community group in the area=SoCalAndroid.Org), they’re member count is 117, 54% our present 216, and reviewing they’re recent discussions:
***1st last meeting 6/20 looks like 1 or 2 attendees.
***2nd last mtg 6/06 looks like 1 or 2 attendees.
***3rnd last mtg 5/02 looks like 3 or 4 attendees.
***Between every meeting there are about 3 discussion topics, but the majority are from Jeffrey the leader.
**So it would seem that Orange County has Android community groups for people to meet in person, but interest is just declining (for reasons I don’t know), ironic in that interest & use of Android is increasing. My only thought is that perhaps the developers & users of Android are just depending on online forums, not in person meetings.
Consequently, my & Lucy’s vote is that we make this change. But first, other thoughts?
I’m trying to get [Destiny] to shut this thing down altogether. Most of our guests seem to be takers more than givers. And while [Destiny] and I love giving, we’re running out of stuff to give. On top of that, [Destiny] wants to move on to JavaScript, and I have no interest in running this group myself.
I hope this is a seasonal thing; maybe we need some cold weather to get Californians to pursue some indoor events.
Anyway, going monthly seems a reasonable compromise. We keep in touch with the Android community without wasting too much time on this.
*Thanks for giving feedback.
*I have replaced my normal first name with “[Destiny]” since that’s the username I use here.
*You write “I’m trying to get [Destiny] to shut this thing down altogether.” -actually this is the first I’ve heard you say this. And I’m surprised you think that as doing so would be very extreme: if one closes a Meetup group, it’s entirely erased by Meetup, definitely not a good thing after enormous investment. And if we just stopped having meetings, that wouldn’t give much opportunity for people to gather (unless some likely-unknown new person would speak up and say “We’re not having meetings, but let’s have a meeting” which in my experience almost never happens in an establishede Meetup group). The obvious logical thing is just to scale down gradually, which is what this does.
*All the rest of what you write seems good!
Based on the response we’ve gotten till now, I’m making this change, starting with our next upcoming main mtg #59: cmt of change saying
~6:45pm a fillipena family stopped by the venue (dad,mom,son & daughter) to buy pizza and noticed our mtg. Son Myron was the only one with an Android so I talked with him.
*He’s got the Android Transformer(sp?) tablet running 4.0 which he got in March, but he’s working for Verizon at a US Military base in Japan while studying at University of Marryland’s Japan branch, and will return in a week, so at my recommendation he will check out our site but especially Japanese Meetups (his dad had heard of Meetup being international).
*I also found his sister reasonably cute so asked him to ask her if she might be interested in me, including checking out my profile on the site. He smiled & might.
